The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

CIMA was founded in 1919 and is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants, with over 232,000 members and students operating in 177 countries, working at the heart of business. CIMA members and students work in industry, commerce, the public sector and not-for-profit organizations.

CIMA works closely with employers and sponsors leading-edge research, constantly updating its qualification, professional experience requirements and continuing professional development to ensure it remains the employers’ choice when recruiting financially-trained business leaders. Professionalism and ethics are at the core of CIMA’s activities with every member and student bound by robust standards so that integrity, expertise and vision are brought together.

The CGMA qualification

The most important qualification offered by CIMA is Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). Completion of CGMA accreditation is done in several steps; students can progress through their learning at own pace and obtain the following interim qualifications:

  • CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting (CIMA Cert BA)
  • CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting (CIMA Dip MA)
  • CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting (CIMA Adv Dip MA)

A CGMA plays a vital role
in managing business opportunities, using evidence to develop dynamic solutions. Management accountants use information of all kinds, not just financial, to lead and inform strategy and drive sustainable success in business. Management accounting is about looking beyond numbers and spreadsheets to add real value to a company.

CGMAs work in all areas
of business, in all types of organizations, in both the public and private sectors, all over the world. They work in finance, IT, marketing,
HR, operations and senior management positions. They could be project managers, management consultants, finance directors or chief executives, and many go on to run their own businesses.

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants

Together with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) CIMA has established the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. CGMA is the global quality standard that further elevates the profession of management accounting. The designation recognises the most talented and committed management accountants with the discipline and skill to drive strong business performance.

The AICPA and CIMA also make up the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (the Association), which represents public and management accounting globally, advocating on behalf the public interest and advancing the quality, competency and employability of CPAs, CGMAs and other accounting and finance professionals worldwide.
